VallarieE/iStock(WASHINGTON) – The Department of Homeland Security has requested that U.S. troops build "temporary facilities" at six locations to house up to 7,500 detained migrant adults, according to the Department of Defense, further expanding the military’s role on the southern border.

The defense officials described the force DHS requested as something that would only be used if CPB personnel were overwhelmed by the situation on the border. Even so, the Pentagon rejected the request for the reserve "protection" force, while it simultaneously approved all of DHS’ other requests for support with Secretary of Defense James.

But military officials emphasized that the temporary tents were only to house additional CBP personnel being sent to the border. However, ABC News has learned that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had made an initial request to the Pentagon “to hold” migrants seized along the border in tent structures, according to a U.S. official.

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon says it will build temporary shelter at the U.S.-Mexican border for at least 7,500 adult migrants who have been turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

The officials said that while there had been informal talks between the Department of Defense and DHS about having the military build tent facilities to house detained migrants, tents were never.

This is not the first time the administration has asked the Pentagon about finding and providing housing for migrants. The DOD in April approved a March request from the Department of Health and Human Services to find housing for as many as 5,000 unaccompanied migrant children. And the Pentagon already has 4,364 troops stationed at the border. They are expected to remain there until at least September.
